economics of crime

The Centre for Economic Performance at LSE in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Citizen Security and Justice Sector will host the 7th Transatlantic Workshop on the Economics of Crime at the London School of Economics on 1-2 October 2015.

This 7th workshop will continue the sequence of Economics of Crime workshops in Paris (2009), Bonn (2010), Torino (2011), Rotterdam (2012), Frankfurt (2013) and Milan (2014).

We aim to bring together researchers from both sides of the Atlantic to present and discuss their work, allowing for an in-depth interaction between those working on the empirical and theoretical analysis of crime and illegal behaviour.

The workshop will consist of two keynote lectures – to be given by Sebastian Galiani (University of Maryland) and Daniel Nagin (Carnegie Mellon University) – and 10 to 12 contributed papers. This year there will be a special session on Crime and Violence in Latin America and the Caribbean to enhance the dialogue and promote cooperation in research.

Other suggested topics covered include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Social prevention of crime and violence
  • Evaluation of police crime reduction strategies
  • Reinsertion and rehabilitation interventions
  • Crime and labour markets
  • Technology and illegal markets
  • Economic crises, poverty, inequality and crime
  • Urbanization and crime

We invite researchers to submit a paper (in PDF) by sending an e-mail to Laura Jaitman (ljaitman@iadb.org). The submission deadline is May 3rd, 2015. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by June 15th 2015. We will provide accommodation and reimburse economy travel costs for paper presenters.

We also especially invite young researchers to submit their work as, for the second year running, the two best accepted papers by authors under 35 will be selected for the Unicredit & Universities Economics Prize (2 x €2,500): .

Information on past workshops can be found here.

The 2015 Organizing Committee is: Laura Jaitman (IDB); Stephen Machin (UCL, CEP/LSE); Randi Hjalmarsson (University of Gothenburg, Queen Mary University of London); Olivier Marie (Maastricht University); Emily Owens (UPenn); Paolo Pinotti (Bocconi)
